Description

Sphero robotics are changing the educational scene by giving students innovative ways to learn concepts across all areas of curriculum.

Session 1 - 3rd June and Session 2 - 4th June 2024 - LIVE ONLINE VIA VIDEO CONFERENCE 3.30pm - 5.30pm AEST

Sphero has been proven to be an effective teaching tool in both formal and informal learning environments. Sphero goes further than teaching maths and science. It can help students develop computational thinking skills, which are necessary if they want a chance at competing globally with other technology-rich economies.

Workshop Outcomes

During this workshop, participants will:

  • understand the functionality of Sphero;
  • explore the Sphero Edu portal (create lessons, discover STEAM projects, link to Google Classroom);
  • engage in activities that support substrands in Mathematics (angles, addition and subtraction, time, length, probability, data and two-dimensional shapes;
  • challenge each other in STEAM orientated challenges; and
  • map Sphero experiences across the curriculum through authentic integration.

Technologies being used in this Workshop

You will need access to a Sphero Robot for this workshop. (If you don’t have access please add the workshop pack to your registration). A laptop with internet access will be required and the following apps installed on your device:

Sphero Edu

Sphero Edu is your hub to create, contribute, and learn with Sphero robots. Go beyond code by incorporating unique STEAM activities to complete with your bot.

Designed for learner progression, Sphero Edu beginners can give robots commands by drawing a path in the app for their robot to follow. Intermediate coders can use Scratch blocks to learn more advanced logic, while pros can use text programming and write their own JavaScript.

Sphero Edu is built for makers, learners, educators, and parents. The interactive platform allows you to keep track of your class or group from one easy place.

Professional Learning Hours

Completing the STEAM in Action workshop will contribute 4 hours of Professional Learning addressing 1.2.2, 1.5.2, 2.1.2, 2.5.2, 2.6.2, 3.2.2, 3.3.2, 3.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation.

It was a fantastic day and I got so much value from the day. There were a lot of ideas and helpful advice to be able to take away and use. I know it will really benefit my teaching and will incorporate the ideas into my programming.

I thought the course was great. Never used robots before and now feel quite confident. The hands on experiences were very valuable as well as the exposure to resources that can be accessed to use in everyday classroom teaching.

This course was effective and purposeful. I particularly liked the way that no question was a 'dumb' question - the most specific, trivial issue was readily sorted and I felt able to proceed. I feel empowered to start exploring and teaching.
